Our Lady is the Tower of David, Arc of the Covenant and Gate of Heaven

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

O ur Lady is the Tower of David, the Arc of the Covenant and the Gate of Heaven

This Special Devotional Series is journeying through the titles present in the Litany of Loreto. This prayer has been used by the Church for hundreds of years to contemplate the goodness of Mary. In the last three conferences, the titles reviewed include: The Virginity of Mary, The Cause of Our Joy, and the Vessel of Devotion. This conference’s focus is on three titles: the Tower of David, the Arc of the Covenant and the Gate of Heaven.

The conference first describes a Concluding Prayer, written by St. Louis de Montfort. He calls upon Our Lady, and as he does so he is making his presence known to her. Listen to the beginning of the audio, which explains how we should pray the Litany and how the titles should make your presence more fully known to Our Lady.

Tower of David

The watchman in the tower watches over and protects the dwellers within a city. When the city is fortified, the dwellers have confidence in the structure of the city. Why a tower? A watchmen in the tower can see an enemy approach from far off.

Our Lady is also a Tower. She protects the people of God. She is active in our defense. Our Lady can see an enemy far off when we may not know the enemy is approaching or even a threat. She protects us. Hear more about the Tower of David.

Arc of the Covenant

The Old Testament describes the Arc of the Covenant as the most precious possession, to be placed in the temple, signifying God’s presence. The Arc, according to the instructions of God, was to be made of incorruptible (very hard) wood, covered with gold inside and out.

Mary is the new Arc of the Covenant. She is greater than the old Arc. She is the Arc of the New Covenant. Mary is free from sin. She is incorruptible and precious in the Eyes of God. She is incorruptible, out of which the New Arc is fashioned.

Three things were placed into the old Arc: The Vessel of Manna, The Rod of Arron and the Tablet of the Law (Tablet of the Covenant).

Within Mary, we see Jesus, the Bread of Life. We do not see the tablet of the Law. Rather, we see Jesus, the Word became flesh.

In the Old Testament, we hear that it stayed inside a house (for three months) on its journey to the promise land. Ultimately, it reached the promise land. Mary, the New Arc of the Covenant, dwelled in a house for three months (when she visited St. Elizabeth). The New Arc helps in leading us to the new promise land…Heaven.

Gate of Heaven

Man was thrown out of Paradise (Garden of Eden). When he left, the gate was shut. Man could not return to Paradise on his own. He is not strong enough to reopen the Gate to Heaven. In the fullness of time, God sends His Son to open the Gate to Heaven.

Jesus steps out of Heaven into the world. He comes to this world to open Heaven for mankind. Jesus comes for man’s salvation. He comes into the world through a Gate. The Gate the Lord Himself will come is closed to all others. The Holy Virgin Mary is the Gate which He comes to the world.

Mary doesn’t just open the door. She is the door through which salvation comes to us!

St. Louis de Montfort says we must go to the Lord the way He came to the world: Through Mary. The gate is not just the way He came to us, but is the way we will enter into Paradise.
