The Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary

The celebration of the name of Our Lady is beautiful and complex.

It is simple . . . the name of Mary. But it is also complex, because to understand this name, it requires considerable effort.

If you read the letters of St. Paul, they are obviously written after the birth of Jesus. He says Jesus is born of woman, but he does not name the woman. He does not describe her. If we pause with this reality, and if we did not have St. Luke’s Gospel and St. Matthew’s Gospel (which give us her name) what would we have? Listen further to this Homily.

But we do know her name! This is the beauty of the account of Jesus’s birth in St. Luke’s Gospel. Amazingly, we know her name because she makes her appearance within scripture at the moment Christ will come into the world!
