No One Merely Has a Private Relationship With Jesus

No One Merely Has a Private Relationship With Jesus

The Gospel reading today reveals Peter’s meeting Jesus, again.

The Gospel reading begins and ends with an abundance. We do well to focus on the beginning abundance. The temptation is to focus on the abundance of fish caught.
The Gospel reading begins with an abundance of people. There is a crowd pressing in on Jesus. Note the contrast. The reading doesn’t begin with Jesus and Simon and their relationship. Rather, Jesus’ relationship with Simon Peter is embedded within the great crowd that presses in upon Jesus.

Why is this important? Because it is instructive! No one merely has a private relationship with Jesus. If there is any relationship with us at all, it is the fruit of the broader relationship with His people.
