The Feast of the Mother of God. The Day The Child’s Name is Made Known to the World

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

The Feast of the Mother of God. The Day The Child’s Name is Made Known to the World

A week ago, we celebrated the birth of the Child on Christmas.

This past week, we reflected on the meaning of His birth. Today we celebrate the naming of the Child. Curiously, our engagement of Christmas . . . our engagement of the Child . . . is an engagement without a name.  We proclaim Christ the Lord. But, we name Him . . . the Child . . . the Son who God gives to us!

It is not until today that the world first hears His name! On this eight day, as was the custom, He has a name. The Child . . . on this day, we can know by name. That name comes into the world the same way the Child did . . . Through Mary. Mary, who bares the secret of His name. A secret from Heaven.

Note: Before the reading of the Gospel, just a fun note that marks this special Feast Day.
