Who is St. Elizabeth of Hungary and Why Is She Important to the Church?

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

Who is St. Elizabeth of Hungary and Why Is She Important to the Church?

How  long does a cut flower last? Days, weeks, longer?

On this day we celebrate St. Elizabeth of Hungary. In our present day, Christians do not talk about this saint as much as other saints. Today, many Christians do not have a devotion to this saint.

The Church requires the observance of this memorial.  It is obligatory. Obligatory memorials are reserved for those that have had an important impact on the Church.

Padre Pio’s memorial is not obligatory. St. Louis de Montfort and St. Faustina are two more examples of memorials which are NOT obligatory. Strange, but in two hundred years, people might say who is Padre Pio. Through the ages, saints who were popular, may not always be as popular or as well known.

Years ago, it would be unthinkable to say that no one would know who St. Elizabeth of Hungary was to the Church. Yet, in today’s age, many do not know who is this saint!

Hear about St. Elizabeth of Hungary and why she is important to the Church. Hear how she is connected to roses and flowers.  Listen to this Meditation Media.

Note: The Homily also discusses the reading about Revelation.
