St. Louis de Montfort: Apostle of the Cross

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

St. Louis de Montfort: Apostle of the Cross

Often   Christians take sound bites or certain events from the life of a saint and focus on that event without appreciating the fullness of grace the Lord gave to the holy man or women.

In today’s world, St. Louis de Montfort is often referred to as the Consecration Saint. And while it is true, many Christians do not know about the fuller life of this holy man. When Montfort died, he was known as The Apostle of the Cross and the Apostle of the Rosary (in that order). On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, this conference was held to kick off the yearlong celebration of St. Louis de Montfort’s life.

Without understanding his title of Apostle of the Cross, and his understanding of the Mystery of the Cross, there is no understanding his devotion to Mary. There is no understanding of his beautiful writings on Consecration. In his writings, Montfort will tell us that the Cross is the subject of adoration . . . Our Lady is not. Note the difference. Adoration is given to Jesus. But why the Cross? Because the Cross is soaked with the blood of Jesus.
