What Happened at Three O’clock?

What Happened at Three O’clock?

On   the afternoon of Divine Mercy Sunday, we hear the Gospel of Good Friday!

That is very curious! Yet this specific Gospel has much to teach us about this day . . . Divine Mercy Sunday.

We hear in St. Matthew’s Gospel about the darkness that settled over the Earth. It is common in Divine Mercy devotion that three o’clock is the hour of mercy. What happened at Three O’clock? Much happens at 3 o’clock. At that hour, St. Matthew tells us, that the Lord cries out . . . My God, My God . . . Why Have You Forsaken Me? When Jesus cries out . . . He does not look toward heaven and cry about His own personal pain! No! He does so to fulfill a line within the Psalms. Here more in this Homily.

At this hour He surrenders His Spirit . . . to save us! When He surrenders His Spirit . . . the sun shines again! There is darkness when He suffers on The Cross, but as He dies . . . the sun shines. Amazingly, when He dies, the world would normally think of the darkness of the grave . . . it becomes light. Darkness dissipates. The sun did not shine during the darkness of the Passion. Now it becomes light! It is the first note anticipating the resurrection.

At 3 o’clock . . . when there is light . . . the earth trembles. It shakes.
