Our Lady Comes to a Wounded World . . . Our Lady of Lourdes

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

Our Lady Comes to a Wounded World . . . Our Lady of Lourdes

Today, the Shrine was given a gift from heaven, flowers for Our Lady.

Gifts to Our Lady are normally more than a simple gift. A single act of kindness directed to Our Lady, often touches other people as well. Whatever is given to Our Lady normally is more than the givers’ intention. Fr. de Montfort speaks of this when we do things for Our Lady.

Interestingly, someone once asked Fr. de Montfort, why don’t you do something for God rather than Our Lady? His response? If I do something for God, He gets a very little thing. This is not a bad thing. In fact, it is a good thing. But the question is not whether it is good or bad, but rather can I give something to God that is even better?

That is the power of doing something . . . for Our Lady. When I perform an act of kindness for Our Lady . . . she receives it (however imperfect the kindness is) with a grateful heart. When we honor her, she understands we are honoring all things God has done in her . . . and through her. We honor her, including the crown God gave to her. . . the Word made flesh.

As she receives our gift of kindness . . . and the honor God has given her, she raises her head and praises God. What does God get from our kindness to Our Lady? God gets the thanksgiving and praises of Our Lady! That is much bigger . . . and much better than the little gift we give. Hear more about this gift to Our Lady on this day.

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. We honor Our Lady’s visit to St. Bernadette. But she does more than visit her. She comes to a wounded world and brings a touch of grace. Hear the importance of this feast day.  Listen to this Meditation Media.
