Hear What Infinite Love Has for You . . . If You Do Not take Jesus for Granted

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

Hear What Infinite Love Has for You . . .

The  Word of God can be our friend . . . and often times, our enemy.

A prophet can offer words that are consoling. He can also tear down and begin to build again. The tear down is not destructive. But the tearing down can be our false opinion of ourselves that we have in our heart. Jeramiah does not tell the people what the people want to hear. While the words may be difficult, they are the Lord’s words.

Jeramiah had a difficult vocation. People did not accept all the words he spoke. In a way, he was “christ-like”.

In the Gospel reading, we hear the Lord speaking in the temple. All were impressed . . . but he is Joseph’s son. Where does He get these words? Jesus is provocative. Jesus says no, I am not going to work signs in His hometown. He speaks to people who think they are entitled. Listen to this homily that talks about the mercy of God.

. . . If You Do Not Take Jesus for Granted

We are not entitled to the mercy of God. Many take His mercy for granted. Yet, we are not entitled to it. Jesus points this out. Jesus says to the towns people, you think you are entitled because you have a certain relationship with Me. You think you are entitled to a miracle or a certain treatment.

Rather, this is about what Jesus’ love can do for you when you stop taking Jesus for granted. Jesus challenges the towns people. Jesus says I am not going to give you what you want (miracles and signs). Their response: anger. The angered heart ultimately does not receive the gifts . . . or mercy Jesus wishes to give.

The reading for the day also includes St. Paul’s description of love (not included in the audio). Love is patient . . . Love is kind . . . If we listen to this passage, St. Paul tells us what we need to be in our hearts. He tells us about Jesus.
