Understand how does David and Goliath Root Us in Marian Devotion!

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

David and Goliath . . . and Marian Devotion!

In chapter three of Mark’s Gospel, the Israelites are plotting to kill Jesus.

This is remarkable, because it is early within Jesus’ public ministry. In the first reading (not within the audio) we hear that David is anointed king . . . but is not king yet. He serves the current king, Saul. Like Jesus, the anointed one serves others and is content to work within the system God has in place.

David respects the authority the king on the throne currently has; though David will assume the throne someday, it will not be today. His heart respects what the Lord has in place.

When faced with a large enemy army, and a giant warrior, the Israelites are terrified. They know, that alone, they are no match for fighting the army . . . or, the giant. David approaches the challenge differently. He does not approach out of fear or inadequacy. He approaches the enemy with a confidence that God is with him. It is not blind enthusiasm. Nor is it someone who just discovered the Lord today and plans to do battle. Either action would be reckless and irresponsible.

David lived the life of God standing by him. He experienced trust in God. David experienced prior danger (attacked by a Lion) and calling out to the Lord for protection and receiving it from Him.  David has “done this before”, in talking with Saul.

This is where the passage begins its Marian tone. Hear about David’s ability to go into battle on more than one occasion, relying on the Lord. Hear about what relying on the Lord really means. Listen to this Meditation Media. During the Homily, an explanation as to why this is also a Marian passage is reviewed. Listen, and understand how does David and Goliath root us in Marian Devotion!
