Q&A: Did Saint Louis de Montfort ever write a manual of spirituality something like Saint Teresa’s Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle?

Father J. Patrick Gaffney, SMM

Sr. de C., St. Louis, MO.

A Manual: Way to Perfection?

Yes and No. No, there is no writing of Saint Louis de Montfort which explicitly and at length details the steps on our journey into the heart of God.

However, – and this is typical of the saint’s writings –  he gives us a bare-bones outline of the journey. You’ll find this sketch of the “Montfortian Castles” under the heading; “The marvelous effects this devotion produces in a soul who is faithful to it”. (TD 213-225).

The seven progressive steps the saint describes are – like the Teresian castles –  not independent, but dynamically interrelated and interlinked. The No reply to your question can become a Yes if we “flesh-out” this outline using all the other writings of Saint Louis de Montfort, especially his Hymns which are a treasure of the spiritual life.
