Q&A: For years I thought Montfort wrote one book, The True Devotion. My present spiritual director tells me that he not only wrote many other writings but that the True Devotion is not his most important one. He told me that if I want to know the thoughts of this saint I had better read some of his other works, especially The Love of the Eternal Wisdom.  Can you provide some insights?

Father J. Patrick Gaffney, SMM

St. Louis de Montfort’s Writings

In the introduction to The Love of the Eternal Wisdom found in Saint Louis de Montfort’s Writings, it is stated; “It has rightly been said that this is Montfort’s principal book for it alone presents a conspectus of his spirituality and in it we see the true setting of his devotion to Mary and his devotion to the Cross”.  (p. 47).

Yes, your spiritual director is correct. Montfort’s beautiful Love of the Eternal Wisdom is a necessity for anyone interested in his spirituality. Moreover, his many other works which you can find in his collective writings, are all important insights into the thoughts of this great saint. Although perhaps his most popular work, the True Devotion does not give the general overview of his thought which can be found in The Love of the Eternal Wisdom.

Editors Note:

Someone interested in learning more about St. Louis de Montfort and Montfortian Spirituality, at minimum, should have four works in his/her library.  These four books are illustrated here, and are available on Montfort Publications (see related website links).
