Love One Another as I Have Loved You

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

. . . As I Love You!

Love one another as I have loved you.

This is the great Christian commandment. … as I have loved you … is the key to understanding this commandment. What is this key? There is something “prior” to being able to truly love one another.

In order to love well, you must first be loved well. This is what the Lord is telling us! And we are! But it is not enough that we are loved by Our Lord. We all must receive this love.

Jesus also says, we do not know what love is … unless we know God! We fall short, unless we know His love for us. That is true love. Greater than all other forms of earthly love.

Jesus does not come into this world merely for us to love one another as the world loves each other. No. He comes to give us something more. He gives the ability to love one another . . . perfectly.

There is no saying that sums up Christian life than this statement. Jesus loves me! We hear that statement in words and in song. While that’s true, Jesus’ love for us . . . is not exclusively for us!

Jesus’ love burns for us. Hear about how this statement and devotion to Mary are related.
