Lent is a Time to Increase Our Spiritual Game

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

Lent is a Time to Increase Our Spiritual Game

T he Lord is very demanding, as the Gospel says Love your enemies. Before focusing on this Gospel passage, the audio first focuses on the time of Moses.

Right at the time the people are about to enter the promise land, they renew their commitment to be the Lord’s own people. Moses looks at the people, and says take seriously what you just said … what you just agreed and promise. There are consequence to this promise. If they are the Lord’s people, they must live according to the Lord’s ways. Live a certain way to remain near God, and not be separate from Him. If they do so, He will hold them in His grace and goodness.

Remember Who You Are!

Moses says it is not enough to just say the words, if one does not also do the living in God’s ways. Remember who you are, and live according to that, says Moses. How easy it is to not live in His ways. How easy it is to not remember. That is true in Moses’ time… and it is true today.

We lose ourselves in our lives. We forget ourselves when we deal with everything we need to deal with on a daily basis. It’s easy to forget who we actually are … to forget the Lord’s ways. St Louis de Montfort says many are mediocre or poor believers, and it is not that we are great sinners. The problem, de Montfort says, is that we are forgetful. We forget we have been given new life by Jesus. We forget the greatness of Jesus’ gift to us! Because we forget these gifts, we do not live the way the Lord desires for us!

Jesus Asks Us All to Aspire to a Higher Standard

It is within this context that Jesus now speaks to His disciples within the Gospel’s passage. What Jesus says is not a request. It is a command. Love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you. Jesus expects this from His disciples … from us! Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Jesus asks us all to aspire to a higher standard. Be more! Be more than the world around you! Why? If you share the life of Jesus, there has to be a visible difference about your life. The Lord wants more from us . . . because of what He provides for us all!

Therefore Jesus states the movement … the aspiration to be perfect is expressed is a specific way. Love your enemies. Hear more about … perfection. Hear more about Increasing Our Spiritual Game During Lent … and always within this meditation media.
