The Lord’s People Hears No Voice

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

The Lord’s People Hears No Voice

The Lord says His People Hear No Voice. Not simply that they do not listen, but they do not hear. In the Gospel the Lord asks opinions about hearing and doing. The Lord gives His message in the readings and the Gospel. We are selective in our own hearing. We are surrounded by a lot of noise. Today, we hear marketing messages constantly, on the radio, on TV and on signs as we drive. While none of it by itself is bad, together, the world gives us much noise. Therefore, we become selective in our hearing.

We learn to not listen all the time. His people do not hear everything. We learn to be selective. We close ourselves to what we do not want to hear. The people in the gospel became spirituality deaf. The people’s ears work, but they became spirituality deaf. They either filled their spiritual life…with the sound of their own voice, which is dangerous. They listened to their own voice instead of listening for the Lord’s voice. Or they listen to the self-important or popular voices. These voices can be dangerous, if they have nothing to do with the will or the word of the Lord.

What are we (today) to make of the gospel? How does this impact our idea of His Coming? How does it impact us during the season of Advent? What are we to make about listening to the Lord, or not listening to the Lord? Listen to this opening prayer, Gospel and Homily given during the third week of Advent.
