The Feast of St. Matthias and Remaining in the Love of Jesus

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

The Feast of St. Matthias and Remaining in the Love of Jesus

S aint Matthias was a late edition to the college of Apostles. He was elected as the replacement for Judas. He is often neglected in our thinking of the Apostles. Many think of him as “the other guy” or after-thought. That’s unfortunate. He is celebrated equally as the other Apostles. His role is important, even though at first glance he seems like a late comer to the Apostolic Ministry.

St. Matthias is not a “late comer” to the Apostolic Witness. Note St. Peter’s words in addressing the needs to address the bitter sting of Judas’ betrayal. It was important to do so, because, in part, the Apostolic number was not complete … they were no longer the group of twelve Apostles.

It was not man who chose St. Mattias, but the Lord … in a special way.

In the Gospel that is read, Jesus tells us … that it was not you who chose Me (Jesus), but I choose you. Hear more about what this means to our Spiritual Life. Listen, and understand more about the love Jesus has for each of us!

Hear more about the election of St. Matthias and the actions of St. Peter. Hear more about remaining in the love of Jesus.

Simone Martini : Italian Painter: St. Matthias 1317-1319

This painting was based upon a drawing from Italian painter Simone Martini. The painting is believed to be completed from the drawings by his studio, and likely not directly from the artist himself.
