Saint Pope John 23rd was born in the Northern Italy town of Sotto il Monte in 1881.

Upon becoming a priest in 1904, he was made the secretary to a bishop. A few years later he was appointed to go to Rome. He was appointed to be a Cardinal in 1953, and was elected Pope in 1958 at the age 76. His birth name was Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, but he chose the name John upon accepting the chair of Pope.
