During the readings before the Gospel this week, we encountered passages from the Book of Tobit. But what is the significance of these readings to the Church? Why are they held in such high regard? Please note that the first reading is not included in this audio.

The Church intends to impart a lesson to us through these readings. It goes beyond simply recounting the trials faced by a family from ancient times. In the Homily, we learn about an angel, Tobit, Tobias, and Sarah. Both Tobit and Sarah are afflicted, and through their prayers, an angel comes to assist them in their struggles.

Sarah has been married seven times, and tragically, all her previous husbands were killed on their wedding day. Tobias becomes her eighth husband. The number seven holds significant symbolism in Scripture, representing fullness, and the Homily provides multiple examples of this. While following the unfolding of this story, it is crucial not to overlook why the Church considers it so important. It is not merely a tale of a family presenting itself before us. In Scripture, there are seven great men, seven great patriarchs: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David. All these men served as vessels of God for all of humanity, propelling progress forward. However, they eventually passed away without establishing a complete union between God and His people.

Then came the eighth great one—Jesus Christ. The Church is represented as the bride, and Jesus is the groom. Take note of how the Book of Tobit relates to the unfolding story of Jesus and His Church.
