Those Who Can Not Be My Disciples
Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM
Be My Disciple!
Those Who Can Not Be My Disciples
In today’s Gospel, Jesus outlines those who can not be His disciples. This Gospel is both difficult to hear, as well as remarkable.
- Unless you hate your life, you can not be my disciple.
- Unless you pick up and carry your cross, you can not be my disciple.
In today’s world, we often say … family comes first. Jesus, however, says . . . no it does not! In the modern world, we often hear . . . I come first! Jesus says, no, you do not!
Note, the shocking word Jesus uses in the Gospel. “Hate”. You must hate your life, Jesus tells us. What is Jesus telling us? In another part of the Bible, Jesus tell us to love ourselves. Today’s Gospel, He tells us to Hate our lives. The audio dives into this further. What Jesus is asking us, via these statements is this; Are you serious about following me, or not?
