I Am The Good Shepherd

Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM

I Am the Good Shepherd

In today’s Gospel (Jn: 10), the 4th Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, we hear the Gospel I Am the Good Shepherd. Jesus proclaims this twice. I Am the Good Shepherd. He says it twice because Jesus wants us to hear and understand these words. I Am the Good Shepherd.

We hear about the Good Shepherd several times, not only in this Gospel but the Psalms. It is important and central to Jesus’ teaching and how He wants us to understand this statement.

The homily starts the explanation by first explaining there is a myth humans believe. “Everyone is a follower or a leader”. That is not really true. All true leaders are also followers. After elaborating on this human myth, the homily gets back to the essence of Christian life. It involves following, not leading. All true Christians follow Jesus.

I Am the Good Shepherd. During the homily, this statement is further explained. Listen to this homily and understand what makes Jesus the Good Shepherd. Listen and meditate on it when we receive the Holy Eucharist.
