Whoever Does the Will of God is My Mother, My Brother, My Sister
Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM
Whoever Does the Will of God is My Mother, My Brother, My Sister
Y OUR mother is outside! Who are my brothers and my mother? Whoever does the Will of God is My Mother, My Brother, My Sister.
In this passage, many Christians feel troubled. Is Jesus pushing His mother aside? Some people who do not believe in devotion to Mary, refer to a passage like this as evidence.
That is not what is going on in this passage. It is good, however, that it troubles some Christians. This passage gives rise to spending time and exploring the depths of its meanings. It makes us listen to this Gospel. The Church provides us the context for this passage. More is explained of this context in the homily.
Listen to the Will of God, then doing it, is worth more than all the sacrifices one can offer. The audio references another reading. I come, Oh God, to do your Will. Where does the Lord say these words? Through Mary, With Mary and In Mary. With this context, which the homily further explains, again listen to what Jesus says. Physically, the crowd surrounds Our Lord preventing His family from entering where He preaches. Hear the passage again.
He Comes to Adopt Us into His Heavenly Family
When Jesus asks who is my family, He asks us all. The Lord does not come to simply belong to an earthly family. He comes to adopt us into His Heavenly family. For those hearing His teachings, He comes to adopt those into the household of our Heavenly Father. Which would make you, my brother, and sister and mother. Ask yourself, are you the Lord’s brother or sister? Do not be quick to answer. Do we do the Father’s Will? There will be the Lord’s brother and sister.
So does Jesus push aside Mary when He says the words in this passage? Listen to what Jesus says. Who is my Mother? The one who does the Will of My Father. What does Mary say at the end of the Annunciation passage? Let it be done with me according to thy word … According to thy Will!
Listen to this seventeen minute audio and meditate on it this week.
