A PERPLEXING SITUATION

Q&A: A number of novices here made their consecration recently. Evidently, they knew very little of its serious obligations. Now a number of them want to be released of its obligation. As their Chaplain what should I do?

Father Roger Charest, SMM

Question submitted by a member and a priest from an upstate New York Parish

The commotion, as you describe it, indicates rather plainly that in this instance the consecration and its elects have been totally misunderstood. Even if the consecration is taken with all the solemnity that an imagination can devise, its nature remains the same. Even if someone reads the words of this consecration while kneeling before a statue of the Blessed Virgin, while holding a lighted candle and in the presence of witnesses, it is still a simple act of the will and it effects only that which is expressed by the spoken words.

If later on someone changes his mind, another simple act of the will, without any fanfare, will release him of his obligations. Even though the consecration binds an individual ” in time and in eternity”, like any other promise it loses its binding force by a contrary act of the will.

From your dreadful experience Montfort’s words at the beginning of the “Secret of Mary” appear doubly wise: “Before you read any further, lest you should be carried away by a too eager and natural desire to know this truth, kneel down and say devoutly the Ave Maris Stella and the Veni Creator in order to understand and appreciate this divine mystery.” (S.M. 2)

Preparation To Understand Montfort Spirituality

Editors Note: Before anyone considers making an Act of Total Consecration, it is very important to understand more about Marian Spirituality According to St. Louis de Montfort. To understand Montfort Spirituality, a requirement before making an Act of Total Consecration, read and view the Secret of Mary (video link) and, ideally, The True Devotion Video (video link).

We recommend, before jumping into these two books/videos,

  1. first, listen to Why Mary?, a brief audio extracted from a larger video (audio link).
  2. second, listen to the audio The Necessity of Mary (audio link).
  3. third, listen to Introduction Audio: St. Louis de Montfort and Total Consecration (audio link).
  4. fourth, What is the Difference between Consecration and Total Consecration (audio link).

After listening to these four audio sets, read and view The Secret of Mary at minimum. Ideally, also read and view True Devotion.

Wow! Why all of this preparation, before doing the Preparation for Act of Total Consecration? To make sure one understands Montfortian Spirituality. And to understand beforehand what one is committing to when one makes their Total Consecration.

When someone repeats the formula of his consecration without moving his lips, he is expressing an act of his will to serve, to be dependent upon the Blessed Virgin. An act of the will need not be made with words.
