Q&A: A King has ambassadors, representatives, mediators because the work is too much for him. So when we attach so much importance to Mary’s mediation does it not imply a certain imperfection in God? – from a member in Syracuse, NY.
Father Roger Charest, SMM
It may be legitimate at times to describe God in human terms, because our human minds find it difficult to wrestle with the Infinite. As a result we become confused.
A human king needs help from mediators because he cannot run his kingdom alone. In God the motive is not inability but generosity, munificence. A being is more perfect when it is not only good in itself but the cause of goodness in others. By creating the office of Mediatrix for Our Lady, Almighty God has provided her with all the goodness, all the perfections that she has to have to fulfill that role.
All the kindness, all the mercy, all the understanding that Mary possesses she has received from God. And all the graces that she distributes to men have also come from God. ”It is not without reason that God has given us mediators with His Majesty. He has seen our unworthiness and our incapacity; He has had pity on us and in order to give us access to His mercies, He has provided us with powerful intercessors with His Grandeur. . .” (T.D. 83).
