I was blind … and now I see!
Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM
“I t was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him.”
The Gospel reading concerning the man born blind is particularly appropriate for today’s difficult and uncertain situation. In them Jesus asserts, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him.”
The issue in the reading in today’s Gospel, one might say is the blind man’s sight. However, the issue is really on Jesus’ sight. Man sees the appearance. God sees the heart. Jesus passed by… and saw a man blind from birth. Jesus sees this man differently than the way the world sees him. This is evident by the disciples question on who sinned… the man or his parents.
There is a point to the man’s blindness. Listen to more about this homily and the lessons that apply to today’s age.
We pray that these present hardships not fill the eyes of our spirits with the darkness of fear and despair but that the light of faith may open them to the ways that the Lord desires to make manifest his works in us.
