What is a Christian

“Anyone who is cast into this divine mold is quickly shaped and molded into Jesus and Jesus into him…” (St. Louis de Montfort TD 219)

What is a Christian? As Fr. Hugh Gillespie, SMM discusses during a recent Living Your Consecration To Mary Retreat, the answer to this question will influence the vision and actions of your Spiritual Life. Why? When we settle for a second best understanding of what it is to be a Christian, at best our living a Christian life will also be second best; that is to say, not realize its full potential. Cluster of answers may include: A Christian is a follower of Jesus! No! A Christian believes in the Gospels! No! A Christian is a person of prayer and charity! No!

Fr. Hugh states a Christian is more than these things. These characteristics are good and necessary, and indeed a Christian includes these characteristics. But that does not make us Christians! Fr. Hugh discusses the teachings of St. Louis de Montfort and outlines what it is to be a Christian in this 7 (seven) minute audio. The first minute or so frames the discussion as part of the St. Louis de Montfort’s Spirituality discussion in this Retreat. The rest of this Spiritual Insight explains What is a Christian and how this definition influences Living Your Total Consecration To Mary.

We hope you find this Spiritual Insight helpful and encourage you to listen to the full Living Your Consecration To Mary Conference Audio.

First Saturday Devotion

First Saturday Devotion
“In going to Jesus through Mary,
we are paying honor to the Lord.” (St. Louis de Montfort)

Christmas Blessings! As we prepare to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, we are reminded that we are all blessed with so many gifts from the Lord. May we suggest that one way to also give thanks is to attend First Saturday Devotion! The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Manorville, NY will be holding First Saturday Devotion, as we do the first Saturday of every month, on January 6, 2018. The day begins at 10:00 a.m. with Adoration, followed by the Holy Rosary and Mass. Join us for a day of prayer. We are sure you will find it a most grace-filled day as we honor our Blessed Mother.

The pious practice of honoring the Blessed Mother on Saturday is an ancient custom, derived from the tradition that Jesus appeared to her on Holy Saturday. Saturday is reserved for honoring the Blessed Mother and as Catholics who are devoted to our Blessed Mother, Queen of All Hearts, we honor her by attending First Saturday Devotions at the Shrine.

We would like to once again remind you that you may obtain a plenary indulgence by attending the devotion, and praying the Holy Rosary with the community under the usual conditions (Confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, etc.). To read more about plenary indulgences , their importance, and the additional ways to earn them for ourselves and deceased love ones, follow this link.

From everyone at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, and The Association of Mary, Queen of All Hearts, may we wish you and your family a Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

May our good Jesus through his most holy Mother keep you and protect you and your family.
